Camera IV: Camera Movement Practice and Evaluation

Self Evaluation

Good example:

Headroom:

There is a good amount of headroom given for the subject, for at least half of the shot. Whilst the subject is moving, the headroom given is steady. To improve, I should give the subject a good amount of headroom when he is stationary.

Nose Room:

There is a very good amount of nose room given to the subject, as there is a lot of space in front, and in the direction, of the subjects' stationary and moving face. To improve, I should zoom in closer to the subject when he is stationary, to keep the same amount of nose room given to him when he was moving.

Lead Room:

There is a very good amount of lead room given to the subject, as there is a lot of space in front, and in the direction, of the subjects' stationary and moving face. To improve, I should zoom in closer to the subject when he is stationary, to keep the same amount of lead room given to him when he was moving.

Anticipatory Framing:

There was a good continuity of anticipatory framing throughout the shot, as I knew what movements the subject would be making, and the direction in which he would be heading. To improve, I should keep the camera speed at the same continuity, to decrease the amount of jerks and sudden movements in the shot.

Bad example:

Headroom:

The amount of headroom given is not continuous, and does not comply with the advisory amount of headroom to give.
n To improve, I should continuously keep a steady pace and height with the headroom for the subject.

Nose Room:

There is not enough nose room given, and when it does comply, it is not continuous. To improve, I should give the subject more nose room, by keeping the camera edge further away from his face in the direction he is facing.

Lead Room:

The amount of lead room is satisfactory, but only for some of the camera movement, and it is not well-composed in leaving a sufficient amount of space between the edge of the camera, and the subject. To improve, I should provide a good amount of lead room for the subject throughout the whole of the shot.

Anticipatory Framing:

I anticipated the movements of the subject, but I did not keep the camera steady, or master the technique of continuous camera movement in this shot. To improve, I should attempt to keep the camera as steady as possible.
